Financially strapped and stressed after the dot-com crash, web designer Jake Cruise turned to his therapist for help. The Doc's suggestion: "Make porn!"

Jake Cruise zoomed into the gay porn scene on the advice of a most unlikely source: his shrink. Cruise had worked as a corporate Web designer until the dot-bust catastrophe. In April 2000 he was financially strapped and struggling with personal challenges such as sleep apnea and weight gain when his therapist dropped the suggestion. He said, "You're a Web designer; do you have anything against doing porn? Why don't you make a porn site?" recalls Cruise, who has since shed the extra pounds and is sleeping just fine. "A year and a half later JakeCruise.com was born."

While amateur videos starring athletic studs are nothing new, Cruise has worked to establish his own brand identity. The guys in his stroke flicks are exceptionally toned, undeniably macho, and not always as straight as viewers might think. To Cruise, qualifiers like gay,  bi or straight don't really matter. What makes a Jake Cruise video unique?
I really like to show that sex is fun, and can be funny. I try to keep the video shoots as natural and unscripted as possible. Every once in a while I'll script things a bit. How do you find your guys?
Initially, I ran an ad through a local Los Angeles newspaper, but more and more, they're finding me. A lot come through referrals now, and because we've grown to be fairly large, many models are submitting applications directly through the site. Some of the hottest guys have come to me through pure luck. I was in New York once and saw a stripper named Jesse in a Times Square strip joint. He was completely hot, so I offered him a role in one of my videos and he agreed to do it.

You've hummed on a lot of amazing cock for your site. Who are some of your favorite guys to work with?
Mikael is one of my favorites, and coincidentally, he's working for me part-time behind the lens. A lot of the guys have worked for me in that sort of capacity as well as [on camera]. I definitely loved working with Giovanni. The beach has all these private little canyons and sits right next to Camp Pendleton and the San Onofre nuclear power plant, so the Marines are constantly patrolling in helicopters. We kept having to do this, stroke and stop, with Marines flying overhead and looking down at us. It was such a bizarre scene to shoot. In many of your videos with the guys, you think outside the crotch — you lick toes, pits, butts. What's your favorite part of a man's body?
Personally, I love the nape of the neck, though you probably wouldn't know it by seeing the films.
